Abstract

How to transform soft data into strategic insights that can help us realize the applications of community’s cultural assets? With this question in mind I developed My City My Spot, a design concept for an application platform that consolidates existing sources of information for design and planning purposes.

This project aims to develop a working prototype for a web-based community’s asset mapping platform. The project will focus on exploring a persuasive and interaction technology design, a method centrally concerned with the way of thinking about target behaviors and how to achieve those goals by using technology for the purpose of changing people’s attitudes or behavior.

This study investigates the following questions:1. How can online technology helps city planners extract ongoing qualitative information from various sources to support decision makings?; 2. How can technology assist us to design applications that encourage people to participate in mapping their community resources and share information about how they feel about their place?; 3. How the social media networks sites and interactive mappings can help us to obtain necessary data for mapping community’s resources for planning purposes?

This project will make a major contribution to the study of cultural planning and creative community design. The proposed design solution provides a cost-effective, dynamic, and information-rich alternative to traditional expensive cultural survey services. The design concept for a web-based community asset mapping is an ongoing process; many of its benefits can only be achieved through sustained collaborative efforts which require an ongoing partnership with the community stakeholders.
